BBB warns of holiday package theft by porch pirates
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - The possibility of package theft grows as more holiday deliveries start showing up at doorsteps across Texoma.
The Better Business Bureau is urging families to take extra steps to protect their gifts; they may have been delivered to the right address, but it doesn’t always mean they were received.
Package thieves or “porch pirates” stole more than $18 billion in merchandise just last year.
Officials say these thieves look for quick, easy opportunities often targeting homes with fast access from the street, especially when packages are visible or sitting within about 25 feet of the curb.
BBB President Monica Horton said simple strategies can help keep those packages safe no matter where you live.
“The best piece of advice is doesn’t leave those packages unattended. Sign up for notifications with the shipping company so you know when that package arrives. A lot of people have Ring cameras now, so they know the moment it’s dropped off. Bring it inside as soon as it’s delivered, or have it sent to a secure location,” Horton said.
Many delivery companies also let you require a signature before a package is left, giving you physical possession right away.
Be sure to check with the carrier on their policies, because once a package is stolen, it becomes a criminal matter.
Horton also encourages families to visit the BBB Holiday Headquarters.
“You’ll see tips on just about everything that has to do with the holidays, holiday shopping, delivery notification scams, and how to scrutinize charitable organizations if you’re planning to donate this time of year,” Horton said.
