TxDOT increases lookout for drunk drivers during annual “Drive Sober, No Regrets” campaign

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - During the holidays, drunk driving-related crashes increase significantly, and TXDoT is reminding Texans to always choose a sober ride.
In observation of this campaign, from December 12 to January 1, law enforcement will be increased and on the lookout for drunk drivers.
To avoid getting behind the wheel impaired, those who plan to drink should always either designate a sober driver ahead of time, choose a rideshare, taxi, or mass transit service, or simply don’t go anywhere until the alcohol has worn off.
TxDOT says that drunk driving crashes are completely preventable, but can be deadly or cause life-altering, disabling, and permanent injuries for survivors. In addition, a first-time DUI warrants jail time and a fine of up to $2,000, with additional offenses costing up to $17,000 or more and up to 10 years in jail.
Texas woman Charisse Thomas and her daughter Destani Oliver, the 18-year-old who lost her life to a drunk driver in the Houston area on February 3, 2020, is at the center of this campaign.
Earlier that same day, Destani had found out she was accepted into college. The driver, just 22 years old himself, had been binge drinking all weekend.
“He got four years in prison, and my family got a life sentence,” Thomas said.
