Wichita Falls business owner faces social media setback
WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) - For Marcus McGee, social media had become a major part of running his business.
But in October 2024, he says hackers took over his Facebook account, changing its name, profile picture and recovery information.
McGee says the page was connected to his business, Maniac’s Mansion, and had built up a following of about 24,000 people.
“Man, it affected, it’s still affecting us now because on that business page, we had about, let me think, we had about 24K followers on it. On our new account now, we have about, I believe we have between 5 to 7K the last time I checked,” McGee said.
McGee says losing access to that page also meant losing an important way to communicate with customers.
He says it affected his ability to book DJ gigs and bring in parties, while also forcing him to rebuild the business’s online presence.
“I did take a hit because, you know, I’m missing gigs and I’m missing, you know, parties that can come here. And it really did hit really, really hard,” McGee said.
McGee says he eventually regained access to his original personal account but has not been able to recover the business page.
He is now working to rebuild his following by reposting old content and reconnecting with customers.
“But it’s not the end. So, just make sure that, you can, back up your stuff and go from there,” McGee said.
McGee says he has since added more security measures and plans to launch a website, giving customers another way to find his business.
